The Governors of Priory School in Lewes, East Sussex are seeking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher from 1st September 2024 due to the relocation of the current post-holder. The appointment is on a full-time, permanent basis to be responsible for all aspects of Inclusion across the school. 

We are looking for a highly motivated, and dynamic leader with an excellent record to lead the development of the school’s vision for Inclusion.  Our school has excellent facilities and we are an integral part of an interesting town within a beautiful area, at the heart of the South Downs.  


This successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Ensures the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon effectively by all.
  • Works within the school community to translate the vision into agreed objectives and operational plans which will promote and sustain school improvement.
  • Demonstrates the vision and values in everyday work and practice.
  • Motivates and works with others to create a shared culture and positive climate.
  • Ensures that strategic planning takes account of the diversity, values and experience of the school and at large.
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher for Curriculum, assist with the leadership and management of all the staff and the general organisation of the school.

The salary scale for this vacancy is Leadership Scale L17 to L21, £69,970 to £77,195.

The Governors wish to appoint a well-qualified, innovative and enthusiastic full time Subject Leader of Art and Photography for this popular and successful subject area. The successful applicant will have a highly successful track record of raising achievement in Art and/or Photography in order to drive further improvement within the department. 

This an excellent opportunity for an experienced Subject Leader or an ambitious teacher with leadership qualities who wishes to develop Art and Photography in a fully inclusive secondary school setting.

Priory has a strong commitment to the Arts, which has built and developed over many years and has a very strong presence within the school and local community. Staff in all the Arts subjects – Art, Dance, Drama and Music -  work together with enthusiasm and commitment and provide an extra-curricular programme which is extensive, varied and well supported.  The area is also well supported by the Senior Leadership Team.  Facilities are good and include specialist rooms and studios for Drama, Dance, Music, Art and Photography.  

The salary scale is Teachers Main/Upper Pay Scale, £30,000 to £46,525 + TLR 2b (£5,348). An ability to teach KS3 and KS4 is essential. The role is being offered on a full-time basis, but the school also welcomes applications for flexible working.

In addition, Priory School are also seeking to appoint an Arts, Culture and Creativity Coordinator to work with the Visual and Performing Arts teams to take overall responsibility for delivering the school’s commitment to becoming the leading creative state secondary school in the region. 

This is a whole school role to develop and implement a vision and plan to coordinate and embed arts, culture and creativity across the curriculum, working with a number of different key stakeholders in order to do so, including subject leaders, teachers, support staff and external agencies and providers, as well as the local community.   The successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply for this role once appointed.

The Governors wish to appoint a well-qualified, talented, committed, and inspiring Teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition, from September 2024 until 31 August 2025 (reviewed for September 2025).

Food Preparation and Nutrition sits within the Technology faculty and benefits from a generous allocation of curriculum time. We are a department of 5 staff and have two dedicated food preparation classrooms along with a range of resources to support the delivery of the subject. We have a full time, dedicated food preparation technician who provides a high standard of technical support. We are also active members of The Food Teachers Centre and benefit from taking part in many of their initiatives and training courses.

We currently offer GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition as an examination course, which is a popular option. We also offer BTEC Home Cooking Skills Level 1 and 2. Our exam results are consistently excellent. We have a cohesive and well-structured curriculum at KS3, which gives our KS4 learners an excellent platform to excel with their exam courses. Our philosophy is to foster a love of cooking, and to develop the skills and knowledge required to allow students to progress to post 16 options. We have a proud tradition in this area.   

The salary grade is Teachers Main/Upper Pay Scale £30,000 to £46,525.  The post would be suitable for either an ECT or an experienced teacher. We are ideally looking for 0.6 FTE, but exact hours can be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Teacher of MFL

The Governors seek to appoint a well-qualified, Linguist with a dynamic and innovative approach to modern language teaching.   The ideal candidate must be able to teach Spanish to GCSE level, an ability to teach French or German at KS3 would also be beneficial.

The Modern Foreign Language department has 9 staff. French, Spanish and German are taught across all year groups and Latin is taught for 10 weeks in year 7.  The ability to teach Latin is desirable but not essential.  Latin is taught at GCSE level.  Exam results are consistently excellent and the department is friendly, supportive and positive with an ethos of innovation and challenge. 

This position is fixed term to cover a period of leave from 1st September 2024 to 31 August 2025.  The salary scale for this vacancy is Teachers main/upper pay scale £30,000 to £46,525.  

This would be an ideal opportunity for either an experienced practitioner or for an Early Careers Teacher newly qualified teacher.

Cover Supervisor

Priory is a very successful school with an excellent reputation. The school is consistently oversubscribed yet has a genuinely comprehensive intake.  The Governors of this successful school seek to appoint:

A dedicated and flexible person to undertake the role of Cover Supervisor, who in the absence of a class teacher, will supervise students in the school or department under the supervisory arrangements established by the school.  An interest in education and the ability to deliver ideas and concepts to an audience of young people would be desirable.

This is an ideal opportunity if you are looking to become a teacher in the future and want experience of a secondary education setting or are passionate about working in schools.

The actual salary is £16,191 to £17,017 a year for 30 hours a week, Monday to Friday and the position is term time only plus inset days.  The salary is based on grade Single Status grade 4/5 scale points 9-13, £23,114-£24,293.
